Rain rain...go away!
« on: February 18, 2012, 05:42:59 am »
Up at 5:39am as huge storms role through Houston. Lexie hates thunder an lightning so I have her thunder coat on her, but she is still panting and shaking... Poor thing.... POOR me!! It's freaking Saturday morning, rain outside and I'm not able to enjoy it and sleep in! Hahaha..

She seems a little better now.... So let's see about getting some sleep..... :(

We would love the rain here where I live. It has been forever since we have had any.
I have Angel who is scared of storms so I know what you are going through.
Did you know that you can give a half of benadryl to Lexie? It will help her calm down.
We use it for Angel. Our vet is the one that told us about over 3 years ago. We use it
only occasionally. And does help her out with storms.

Hmmm. I need to try that.  Is it half or can you give a full? Just curious.  She weighs about 21-22 pounds.

Our vet told us that you go by weight. If your dog weighs 12 pounds, a half will do. Since it comes in 25 mgs per tablet you could give Lexie a whole one. But what I would do is start her off with a half and then in a hour give her the other half.

Okay, good information!  I will have to remember this next time we have a huge storm come through.  Is it simply one a day, or is it 1 every 4-6 hours?

Gotcha.. Okay, I will remember that next time I hear that we will be having some storms rolling through our area. Thanks!

I use a natural calming liquid for Molly when she gets anxious.  Its called Pet Eze Plus - doesn't make her loopy, just relaxes her.  My greyhound Jake used to be afraid of storms and I would plug in the DAP diffuser for him.

I hope your rain has let up!

I tried the DAP diffuser and it did not do anything for Angel.  Spent the money on it and it as a waste of money for me.
They say it does not work on every dog. That is why I asked my vet about what I could do for her. But each dog is different,
so you never know. I do know others where it did work, So I will not say anything about it other that you can try it and I hope it works for your dog.

We bought a "Thunder Shirt" for Lexie. I think it does help her, but I have to get it on her before the storm. I think she gets too worked up during the storm so it takes her awhile to calm down. I will try to get it on her quicker next time we have a storm

Great! I made one for our greyhound because we were told they are very
afraid of storms. Well guess what? She is not afraid of them. So here it sits.

The Benadryl makes them sleepy, so when they are sleeping, they aren't awake and anxious. I have heard good things about the Thunder shirts, too. We hardly ever get thunder storms here; just lots of rain! That really loud thunder can be scary, though, for people, too.

We use it only when there are really bad storms. Otherwise I just hold Angel. Never seems to make her sleepy.
I guess that is because she is an iggie. Hyper hyper hyper.
